Building a Lower Cowl
PA-22/20 conversions — notes that can be accomplished under FAR 21.303(b)(2).
- For this discussion, consider the front edge toward the oil cooler, the rear toward the cockpit, the air scoop as the inlet to the air box, and the air outlet as the lower aft bottom (often with a lip). Topside is the latch edge; the sides have the three screw holes to the fuselage.
- Remove the edge channels and cowl latch brackets from the original cowl; clean and repaint.
- Use the original cowl as a form where practical; build replacement sections carefully to match contours and cooling airflow.
- Transfer latch and fastener locations accurately before final trimming.
- Check fit on the aircraft before paint; verify oil cooler and induction clearances.
